Monthly Favorites: April 2022

Hi there,

Looks like I’ve hardly posted on the blog this month, oops. I keep telling myself I’ll make it over here more frequently but, well, life gets in the way sometimes. Amazing, messy, beautiful life. This month has been full of birthdays, a holiday, social gatherings, and lots of writing.

April is one of my favorite months of the year, and it’s not only because of the special events I mentioned above. It’s because April is National Poetry Month!

Every April, various corners of the internet are alive with poetry. Romanticizing daily life, finding the perfect word, counting syllables, and more. National Poetry Month means lots of people are writing poetry, including novelists, short story writers, and any kind of writer that loves the poetic medium.

I look forward to April in a similar way to how I look forward to November’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Lots of people actually refer to April as National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) and if you search this on social media, you’re bound to find tons of newly scripted poems ready to be read.

Don’t know what to write about during NaPoWriMo? No problem! You’ll find there are several communities and individuals who share a poem a day, a few of which I’ll highlight below. If you like to read or write poetry, read on — I think you’ll enjoy this month’s favorites because this month they’re all about poetry.

coffee & poetry writing :)

The Poetry Club

I joined this back in November as a founding member just as Shelby Leigh opened the doors to her new community: The Poetry Club. This little club is the greatest place I’ve found to share poetry, read poetry, talk poetry, and write alongside other poets during virtual meetups.

Each month there are two virtual hangouts — one is a webinar presentation by a published poet (past guests have included Amanda Lovelace, Adri B. Cofer, and Lex Vranik), the other is a virtual write-in where you can show up and write whatever poetry you’d like or choose from the prompts presented during the hour-long meeting. Both types of virtual get togethers are fantastic, and Shelby is a kind and knowledgeable leader who keeps the space friendly, welcoming, and teeming with creative energy.

You can join the club here. (Note this is an affiliate link and so I may receive a small amount of compensation if you click through and join the club.)

April Poem A Day (PAS) Challenge

Twice a year, Writer’s Digest hosts the Poem-A-Day Challenge, a series of daily prompts I always look forward to reviewing. This is one of my go-to poetry prompt lists, and I love the community that surrounds this event. Lots of folks write their poetry in the comments section each day, but some share on social media also. Speaking of social media…

@AmyKayPoetry Poetry Prompts

All throughout the month of April, Amy Kay shares a new poetry prompt on her Instagram, and I love how her prompts often feel outside of the box. They’re inventive, they get me thinking, and these prompts also get me a bit out of my comfort zone.

That’s it for this month :)

Katie Rodante is a poet and writer obsessed with storytelling and creativity. Her books include Wreathbound, Autumn Reveries, Woodland Witch, and her upcoming novel Fangs and Frosting. When she isn’t writing, she can be found strumming her harp, practicing yoga, or playing games—video or tabletop, not the drama-between-characters kinds she writes in her books. She lives in sunny Dallas, Texas with her husband, two children, and a morkie named Hamphrey.
