A Universe In My Palm

a poem about adaptation and growth — scroll to the bottom to hear this poem read aloud

In my palm I grasp
the beginnings of a new world
a whole, tiny ecosystem
flourishing

Stars illuminate
a nearly cloudless sky
bursting with energy
of destiny unfulfilled

Frenetic action
a will to succeed
every movement sacred
and full of hope

The world wants to grow
but instead
I take the tiny glass
and shake it up

Particles mix and swirl
they flow from the jar
and drift in the sky
to become one with the galaxy

I watch the molecules disperse
though shaken, I know they will
settle into their new home
and learn to flourish again

Katie Rodante is a poet and writer obsessed with storytelling and creativity. Her books include Wreathbound, Autumn Reveries, Woodland Witch, and her upcoming novel Fangs and Frosting. When she isn’t writing, she can be found strumming her harp, practicing yoga, or playing games—video or tabletop, not the drama-between-characters kinds she writes in her books. She lives in sunny Dallas, Texas with her husband, two children, and a morkie named Hamphrey.
