25+ Writing Prompts for a Summer Haiku Poem (Seasons Series)

Summer is such a special time of year. For many, it’s a time of freedom from obligation, a time to travel, and a time when it doesn’t quite matter what day it is—all that really matters is the fun you’re having and the memories being made.

I’ve put together this page as a resource to help anyone wishing to write a haiku or poem about Summer. It contains ideas and imagery which I hope will inspire you.

This is part of a post series on writing seasonal haiku. Other seasons: Spring | Autumn | Winter

Summer Haiku Activities and themes:

  • Swimming in a pool

  • Laying out in the sun

  • Creating art with sidewalk chalk

  • Running barefoot in grass

  • Looking for shapes in the clouds

  • Collecting leaves, rocks, etc from outside

  • Skipping rocks at the lake

  • Going camping

  • Searching for constellations in the stars

  • Going for a hike

  • Sleeping with the windows open

  • Watching the sunset

  • Playing lawn games

  • Rolling down a hill

  • Reading a book outside

  • Playing tag at the park

  • Playing ball outside

  • Hunting for insects

  • Kayaking

  • Boating

  • Napping outside in the shade

  • Reading a book under a tree

Feelings and Atmosphere to Consider:

  • Freedom from school, from obligation

  • Going to bed after midnight, waking up around noon

  • Spending all day at the beach with nothing to do but relax

  • Clothes sticking to you the moment you go outside

  • Slick sweat on your face as the sun beats down on you
